On Monday, Jan 26, the League of Women Voters hosted a booth in the middle of the Prospect commons, advertising for their cause.
The league hopes to protect and expand the rights for voters. According to their website, they “empower voters and defend democracy through advocacy, education, and litigation, at the local, state, and national levels.”
Barb Sabaj, a worker for the organization, stood at the booth, calling out to students to register to vote. She believes that everyone should register, and use their right to vote, even as high school students.
“We believe, as a league, that voting secures all other rights,” Sabaj said. “We aren’t here to tell you who to vote for, we just want to make sure that you can vote.”
Sabaj has been a part of the league for ten years, every of which they have been at Prospect during this time to help students register. As of Jan 26 at 1:00 p.m., about 20-25 students were registered to vote, according to Sabaj.
Senior Julia Ullegue stopped by the booth with her sister to check out what it was all about. She explained that she found out about the league through an email she had received; she also noticed that the Chicago Bears had been working with them.
“I hope that a lot of people will hear about it the same way that I did and think, ‘oh that’s cool,’ and that this will help them vote and act on their civic duty,” Ullegue said.
Lisa Christensen, standing behind the booth for the league just like Sabaj, has been working to register young voters for a year and a half. Christensen hopes that the league being there will help students to be more aware of what is happening not just in politics, but also the world around them. She wants them to take action in what they believe.
“Your vote matters,” Christensen said. “Vote your ethics and what you believe.”
